Rich Internet Technology 01.10.2004 - Web Apps are changing

Rich internet technology is changing and Macromedia developers need to retool. Those were the major themes that Allen Manning, technical director of UK Macromedia Flex Partner, Prismix, hit home at the most recent UKCFUG seminar.

The free event drew UK developers and designers from the greater London area to listen to the ColdFusion beta-tester talk about Flex, Flash and the rich Internet application marketplace.

Manning’s technical presentation, Working with Large Datasets in Macromedia Flex and ColdFusion, led off with examples of how web applications are changing. He presented proof points that a new generation of client rich internet technology is making enterprise business application development simpler and better than ever. He stressed, however, that developers need to update the way they view data.

“Instead of navigating around pages and areas, you have to move around your data using views and tools to build next-generation Internet and business applications that meet user approval.”

Moving server logic onto the client side, Manning said, takes a deeper understanding of the tools themselves, be it Flash, Flex, ColdFusion or open-source content management systems, such as FarCry.

Before launching into the meat of the presentation, which gave developers a series of examples, each one more sophisticated than the last, of how to work with large amounts of data, the issue of accessibility came up. An audience member asked if Flash was in danger of failing accessibility requirements. The consensus was no.

The audience walked away with concrete ideas of how to create an architectural analysis that will ultimately help them develop applications that make sense to the end user. After the presentation, several went to a nearby pub to continue the discussion.

30.09.2004 - Working With Large Datasets in Flex and ColdFusion

As Web developers we need to worry about displaying and managing large amounts of data. Tens of thousands of business objects - contacts, invoices, work orders – all the critical stuff that makes business work - is in our hands. Can we do it better? Is there an easier way?

Macromedia's Matt Chotin has insights into ways of working with large datasets in Flex. Prismix, a leading Macromedia developer and UKCFUG sponsor, is hosting a seminar September 30 to show developers how to apply Chotin’s concepts and patterns to their Flex and ColdFusion applications.

16.08.2004 - New UKCFUG design released

After a week of work we released the new design of the UK ColdFusion User Group website. The website uses ColdFusion MX and the FarCry Content Management System. As time was tight we couldn't move away from the old layout too much, but we hope the new design will improve the overall feel of the site. Thanks to Filip our designer for putting together a truely awesome design!

01.06.2004
- Free Macromedia Flex Developer Seminar

Prismix will be giving the first of many free Flex seminars in London on Thursday 17th June. Using the Flex Store as an example, Prismix Technical Director Allen Manning will walk the audience through a new world of client side Flex architecture.

"After building a couple of initial 'getting started' applications with Macromedia Flex, developers often experience a feeling of liberation: all of a sudden, the all-too-well-known limitations of HTML for building applications disappear, and it’s hard not to get excited by the new possibilities and opportunities that the Macromedia Flex Rich Internet Applications platform unleashes."
